The Destin Derby

Racing children for the good of the people
Download printable rules (PDF)

How the Derby Works

  1. Six children line up on the starting line — each child represents a horse.
  2. Every guest stakes $1 on a single racer. All the dollars together form the purse.
  3. Roll two dice. Each die (1–6) moves that racer forward one furlong.
  4. The first racer to cross the finish line wins the Derby.
  5. The purse is split evenly among everyone who backed the winning racer.

A furlong is any length you like — mark them on the ground with tape, cones, or chalk. Set as many furlongs to the finish as you want; the more you add, the longer the race, so size it to the time you'd like to fill.
